Духовно Предавање – Децембра 3. 2016. год.
By the grace of God, we are blessed to report on another successful Orthodox Retreat. This is the 21st retreat hosted by the St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church on Barton St in Hamilton, Ontario. There were approximately 180 faithful in attendance from Orthodox communities across Southern and Southwestern Ontario. It was a great joy to spiritually nourish our souls, in communion and fellowship with our brothers and sisters in Christ from parishes representing the Serbian, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian, Antiochian and Orthodox Church of America.
There were two guest speakers. Our keynote speaker was Archimandrite Father Demetrios Carellas, retired priest from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His presentation was entitled ‘Our Most Beloved Theotokos’. The talk was in three parts: Talk 1 – Conception of the Theotokos, Talk 2 – Nativity of the Theotokos and Talk 3 – Entrance of the Theotokos into the Temple. Father Demetrios kindly gave everyone who attended the retreat a beautiful colour icon of the ‘Mother of God Wider than the Heavens’.
We were honoured to have as our special guest speaker His Grace Bishop Dr. Mitrofan of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Diocese of Canada. His Eminence was given a warm greeting, after which he briefly addressed the gathering. This was the 1st retreat that His Grace has attended since his enthronement as the Bishop of Canada on Sep 18, 2016. God willing, we pray that he will be with us for many more.
We would like to acknowledge the following clergy for their attendance and support of this event; Archimandrite Christodoulous, Dean of the Seminary of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Canada, Fr. William Makarenko from St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Hamilton, Fr. Peter Shaskoff from Holy Protection Russian Orthodox Church in Hamilton, Fr. Costas Marinos from Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church in Brantford, Fr. Martin Meitz from Holy Transfiguration Antiochian Orthodox Church in London, Fr. Dejan Obradovic from St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Niagara Falls, Fr. Geoffrey Korz from All Saints of North America Orthodox Church in Hamilton, Fr. Milojko Dimitric and Fr. Djuro Samac from St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Cathedral on Nash Rd in Hamilton, Fr. Daniel Ritty and Subdeacon Burt Weigen from Christminster Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia in Niagara Falls New York and our own Fr. Vojislav Pavlovic from the host parish St. Nicholas Serbian Orthodox Church on Barton St in Hamilton.
In addition to nourishing our souls, we were treated to a delicious lenten meal prepared by the Serbian Circle of Sisters ‘Mala Gospojina’, under president Milka Culic. Thanks to Milka and all the sisters for a wonderful meal, for which we received many compliments.
We would like to thank those who brought non-perishable items for our food drive. The donations will be shared with those in need and will be delivered to St. John the Compassionate Orthodox Mission in Toronto, as well as local Hamilton food banks.
Those in attendance received a gift from our parish – a book entitled ‘The Orthodox Veneration of the Mother of God’ written by St. John Maximovitch. It is our hope that we will continue to feed our hearts and souls with spiritual writings, to better understand and practice our beautiful ancient Orthodox faith.
Following the retreat, many faithful crossed over to the church for prayer lead by local clergy, with chanting by Fr. Lazar Vukojev, retired priest from the Serbian Orthodox Church in Hamilton.
We would like to thank the organizing committee and all those who worked hard with love and stewardship for our church and who made this retreat possible including; promotion, hall set-up, registration, food, bookstore and audio. Our next retreat is planned for the weekend of the 5th Sunday of Great Lent in 2017. All are welcome!
